A blank page, a rewrite. ✍🏻 ✨ Fall has fin A blank page, a rewrite. ✍🏻 ✨

Fall has finally made it to the Bay Area. I woke up to a dawn rainbow and the petrichor (why do I see this word EVERYWHERE in YA now?!), and I breathed in the feeling of a new season. I love this time of year, and for the first time I’m embracing the slowing down of the earth and energy without fighting it. I’m sleeping more, moving less, and am happier than I’ve been in a long time despite life being very busy.

Revisions on STAR BOOK have been slow-going. I kept adding and removing bit by bit, until I got frustrated because my word count hovered at the same number for weeks. Finally, I cut the whole second half and put it in its own document. Now, I paste back in what I need, and free write the rest. It’s hard not to see this rewrite as a step backward, knowing I have the lather, rinse, repeat of hand edits and beta reads ahead; but in moments like this I have to trust my gut and break the story before I can put it back together. Every book I write has been different—this one has fought back more than any story before. I think that’s a good thing. ☺️

How is your writing going this fall? If you’re doing #finishurbookfall, let me know what your project is about!! 🍂☕️

All glammed up on a Saturday to celebrate THE ENDL All glammed up on a Saturday to celebrate THE ENDLESS SKIES’ third year anniversary! ✨🦁⚔️ In some ways, today feels like the first day I’m truly celebrating this book. And I am biased, but I don’t feel that TES really got her due.

✨STORY TIME✨
Three years ago, on my pub day, I got the news that B&N hadn’t picked it up to be sold in-store. I don’t know if that knowledge was intentionally withheld, but to say it dampened my spirits was an understatement. In retrospect, of course I could have asked: but my first book had been in stores, so I didn’t think of it. A few local indies had it, for which I am still so grateful, but not being picked up at a national chain was like a punch to the gut.

Then, when TES didn’t sell as well as we’d hoped, I internalized that to mean it wasn’t a good book. Even though I can preach to others about how poorly written books can sell well and vice versa, it has taken the time and distance from pub day for me to be at peace with that about THE ENDLESS SKIES. There are lots of reasons she might not have done as well—we were in the murky post-COVID era, I wasn’t a lead title, etc.—but here is the hard truth: I love this book. I DO think it’s well-written (even *KIRKUS* liked it, iykyk!). I am proud of it.

Sure, there were misprints and at least one plot point I wish I could change. But the story and writing itself represents a moment in time. TES is the best book I could have crafted at that point in my life, with (at the time) nearly eight years of daydreaming and building of a very intricate fantasy world on its pages. To this day, I feel like I can walk the streets of the Heliana; I know it so well.

If you’ve ever picked up THE ENDLESS SKIES or supported me on its journey: I am so, so grateful for you. 💛💛💛 And if you’re new and looking for a standalone fantasy so full of heart that it couldn’t possibly contain any more, I hope you’ll give TES a try. Reviews on any platforms are always appreciated!

Now let’s go eat cupcakes.🧁
